Jakarta Museum

Completed in 1627, the building initially served as the Dutch East Indies Company's Town Hall. Additions and renovations including a stone gate, offices and renovations were added between 1705 and 1715. The known Indonesian hero, Diponegoro, was said to have been imprisoned in its dungeon before his exile to South Sulawesi.

The building was used as military barracks and offices when the Jakarta City Administration decided in the early 1970s to make it the focus of a restoration plan of old Batavia. Now a museum, it provides the historical background of Jakarta through displays of old maps and antiquities including furniture and porcelain used by the Dutch rulers of Batavia, plus a 16th century Portuguese cannon which stand across the cobblestone square.

Each of the areas is designed to give the visitor a feel of the region he is visiting through features and architecture of the area at a certain period of its history and by the use of animated puppets in the Palace of Dolls.

Indonesia in Miniature Park

An extensive park to get a glimpse of the diverseness of the Indonesian archipelago, it represents Indonesia's 27 provinces and their outstanding characteristics, reflected most strikingly in the exact regional architecture of the province. It has its own orchid garden in which hundreds of Indonesian orchid varieties are grown. There is also a bird park with a walk-in aviary, a fauna museum and recreational grounds with a swimming pool and restaurants.

Of special interest here at Taman Mini is the Museum Indonesia. A richly decorated building in Balinese architecture, it houses contemporary arts, crafts and traditional costumes from the different regions of the country.

Open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. daily.

Central Museum

Established in 1778 by U.M.C. Rademacher under the auspices of the Batavia Association of Arts and Sciences, it offers historical, prehistorical, archaeological and ethnographic aspects of Indonesia through its extensive collection of artifacts and relics which date as far back as to the Stone Age. It has one of the most complete collections of bronzes and ceramics dating back to the Han, Tang and Ming Dynasties. The Museum has one of the finest numismatic collections in the world, including cloth and money which was used on several islands until recently. The religious art section is filled with statuary and sculpture salvaged from sites of Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic edifices. Its collection of cultural instruments, household utensils, arts and crafts provide an introduction to the life of the various ethnic groups which populate Indonesia. This museum is popularly known as Gedung Gajah or "Elephant Building" because of the stone elephant offered by King Chulalongkorn of Thailand in 187 1, placed on the front lawn of the building.

Jalan Jaksa

Jalan Jaksa (jalan meaning 'street' in Indonesian) is a colorful street located in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. Its name literally means "Prosecutors' Street", as it used to be a place where legal students congregated, due to the fact that it contained affordable lodgings which suited their student budgets.

Today Jalan Jaksa is still one of the main budget accommodation and budget entertainment streets in Jakarta, with backpackers and expat teachers of English replacing the now long-departed legal students.

Although the street is not particularly long, it is lined with numerous hostels, hotels, travel agents, cafés, bars and restaurants, and is often one of the first points of call for many visiting travelers.

While it is nowhere near as touristy or as developed as its counterparts in Kuta, Bali or the Khaosan Road in Bangkok, it still manages to offer a selection of services helpful to the average tourist.

Accommodation

Jalan Jaksa and its surrounding areas have a wide range of accommodation options. The street itself offers mainly low-end accommodation from US$4-$15 a night, with hostels often situated off the main street on alley (gang) running out to the side.

Wahid Hasyim Road, the road which dissects the lower end of the street, offers plenty of midrange options including the Ibis Hotel. For something a bit more upmarket a few minutes' ride in a taxi brings one to Thamrin Road, where four- and five-star hotels are plentiful.

Food

As with many places in surrounding Jakarta and throughout Indonesia, when the sun sets, the pavements become home to countless temporary lean-to eating places known as warungs. Grilled and fried food are the main fare here: armed with a gas burner, old beaten up wok and small grill fueled with coconut shells, this is Indonesia's version of fast food, with most dishes being cooked and ready in a few minutes. Fried rice (nasi goreng), fried noodles (mie goreng), satay (small beef kebabs with peanut sauce), grilled fish (ikan bakar) and other Indonesian dishes are offered for around US$0.30-0.50 a dish. The street also has several cafes and restaurants that offer reasonably extensive western menus.

Nightlife

Jalan Jaksa has several bars and cafés. Unlike a lot of places in Jakarta, where the price of alcoholic beverages can often be higher than in European capitals, all the places in Jalan Jaksa offer a selection of beer for little more than it costs to buy from a local supermarket. It is also one of the places where every roadside vendor also seems to sell beer, with ice-packed, beer-filled cool boxes being a common sight. Apart from just being able to drink until late in the night, there are also a few places to listen to live music, and a pool table.

Luncurkan vPRo, Intel Bidik 33 Persen Pasar Korporat

"Seharusnya pemanfaatan TI sekarang jadi enabler, bukan hanya sekedar tool," tambah Budi.

Blok M

Blok M is a business and shopping quarter located in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Indonesia. The development is less modern than some of the developments near Kota, Central Jakarta and many of the buildings are run down. Still, the area becomes quite crowded daily, and even more so nightly. Much of the popularity of the quarter is due to the prices of goods (which are often low due to the relatively inexpensive property costs for vendors), the night life, and the accessibility of the center, considering it contains one of the largest bus stations in Jakarta.

In the main shopping portion of the quarter (called Blok M mall) one can purchase any variety of goods. The mall is notorious for having low prices but bartering is considered a requirement. Outside of the Blok M mall, there are a couple of western standard malls, Plaza Blok M, and Pasaraya Grande. The Plaza is a standard mall, while Pasaraya Grande is a giant department store run by the government. Its two contiguous buildings include a big food court in the basement and an international standard (with corresponding prices) movie theatre at the top.

Arguably the most popular portion of blok M, and certainly what has given it most of its notoriety is the Pelatehan Road, which is the portion of the quarter that contains the bars and clubs. Many of the bars become extremely crowded at night and are known to stay open extremely late.

2003 Marriott Hotel bombing

The 2003 Marriott Hotel bombing occurred on 5 August 2003 in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, Indonesia. A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb outside the lobby of the JW Marriott Hotel, killing twelve people and injuring 150. All those killed were Indonesian with the exception of one Dutch businessman. The hotel was closed for five weeks and reopened for public on 8 September.

Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), an organisation allegedly affiliated with al-Qaeda, is suspected of responsibility for the bombing. 14 suspected Islamic militants have been arrested in connection with the attacks. The police conceded that they were in possession of information, gained from an interrogation, about possible JI strikes in the days before the attack. Possible targets where believed to include the Grand Hyatt, Mulia and the Marriott hotels, the Citraland and Kelapa Gading malls in Jakarta, along with various sites used by Christian congregations. Although police insisted that they were increasing security in these areas, in the case of the Marriott, the hotel's management says no warning was ever delivered.

New Bluetooth Protocol Saves PC Data To PDAs, Phones

Transferring Internet content from a PC to your cell phone or PDA is about to get a whole lot easier.

On Thursday, at Ziff Davis' Digital Life consumer electronics trade show in New York, the Bluetooth SIG -- a group that develops and approves various wireless technologies for the specification -- announced the release of a new version of the technology, called "TransSend".

According to Michael Foley, executive director of Bluetooth SIG, the free client/server application will allow content such as maps, phone numbers, address cards or other text and image-based data from the web to be transmitted directly to a specific user's phone or PDA with one click.

Jakarta Riots of May 1998

Jakarta Riots of May 1998 were riots that occurred in several parts of Indonesia, notably Jakarta and Surakarta during May 1998. The riots were triggered by economic problems like food shortages and mass unemployment in Indonesia.

The Indonesian currency Rupiah had collapsed and prices of basic goods skyrocketed. Students took to the streets in Jakarta and protested against then President Suharto. The rioting started after four students from Trisakti University were shot dead during a demonstration on 12 May 1998. After the funeral the following day, rioting started outside the university, with police and military offices and cars as the major targets.

The riots became more widespread on 14-15 May 1998 and quickly turned into a pogrom targeting properties and businesses owned by ethnic-Chinese (Chinese Indonesian), who were made into scapegoats. Many shops put up signs such as "Milik pribumi" ("Owned by native Indonesian(s)") or "Pro Reformasi" ("In favour of change"). Otherwise, shops owned by ethnic Chinese were looted and burned There were also hundreds of documented accounts of ethnic Chinese women being raped, tortured and killed. Fearing for their lives, many ethnic Chinese, who made up about 3-5% of Indonesia's population, fled the country.

In the aftermath, a fact finding team from the Indonesian Human Rights Commission stated that the events were orchestrated by "certain groups" who were "well built and had short cropped hair". The team fell short of accusing the military, but privately several members of the team have mentioned that what happened was a repeat of the Malari riots of 1974. In that case, the riots were started by members of Opsus (Operasi Khusus -- Special Intelligence Operations) under the command of Gen. Ali Moertopo. Years after the fact, Gen. Moertopo acknowledged his complicity in that riot.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Indonesian: Bandara Internasional Soekarno-Hatta) (IATA: CGK, ICAO: WIII) is the principal airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is located about 20 km west of Jakarta, in Tangerang Regency, Banten. The airport became operational in 1985, replacing the former Kemayoran Airport (domestic flights) in Central Jakarta, and Halim Perdanakusuma (international flights; still operating) in East Jakarta.

The land area of the airport is 18 km². It has two independent parallel runways separated by distance of 2,400 m connected by a cross taxiway. There are two main terminal buildings: Terminal 1 is for all domestic services apart from Garuda Indonesia and Merpati Nusantara Airlines, and Terminal 2 serves all international flights as well as all domestic flights by Garuda and Merpati Nusantara Airlines. Each terminal building is separated into 3 concourses. There are Terminal 1A, 1B, and 1C serving (mostly) domestic flights by Indonesian airlines but, terminal 1A isn't working anymore. It was serving flights by Sempati Airlines, but Sempati Airlines ceased since the Asian Monetary Crisis 1998. While terminal 2D and 2E serving all international flights by international airlines (all Garuda Indonesia international flights are from terminal 2E) and terminal 2F for Garuda Indonesia and Merpati Nusantara Airlines domestic flights.

The airport is named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta.

The airport was designed by a French architect Paul Andreu, who also designed the collapsed Terminal 2E at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. One of the major characteristics of this airport is the incorporation of the local vernacular architecture into the design, and the presence of tropical gardens in between the waiting lounges. However, due to the low maintenance, not too strategic location and lack of budget, the airport is inferior to many international airports in the region.

Now Angkasa Pura II is planning to build a new terminal with modern design. Terminal 3 is build for low-cost carriers. There is a masterplan to make 5 passenger terminal +1 hajj terminal and 4 runways.

TransJakarta

TransJakarta is a bus rapid transit system in Jakarta, Indonesia. The system is modeled on the successful TransMilenio system in Bogotá, Colombia. Alternative common names include Busway or TJ.

History

The first TransJakarta line opened to the public on January 15, 2004. The first two weeks of service were free, while commercial operation started on February 1, 2004. Since April 21, 2005, TransJakarta has employed female drivers.

TransJakarta suffered some initial teething problems, like when the roof of one of the buses rammed into a railway tunnel. In addition, many buses had technical issues like broken doors and stop buttons.

One of oversights of TransJakarta is that the buses were built for taller Western people. As a consequence many of the hand straps are too high for Indonesians to reach.

  • January 15, 2004: Corridor I, Blok M-Jakarta Kota (soft launch)
  • February 1, 2004: Corridor I, Blok M-Jakarta Kota (commercial service)
  • January 15, 2006: Corridor II, Pulogadung-Harmoni and III, Kalideres-Harmoni open
Pasenggers

As of March 2006, TransJakarta carried an average of 120,000 passengers per day, up from 65,000 in late 2005. Ridership has grown rapidly in Corridors II and III while steadily increasing in Corridor I. For the three currently operating corridors, ridership is expected to peak at 260,000. Further growth will come with the construction of Corridors IV, V, VI, and VII in late 2006.

There is a special program for the student groups. They have special bus not merged by the general passengers. The target is to train these students to stand in line, be decent, and like the transport car.

Ciliwung River

Ciliwung River (Sungai Ciliwung) is a river in Jakarta, Indonesia. The river flows from its source near Puncak on the highlands of West Java to the Jakarta Bay.

In circa 1720, there were many sugar factories built along Ciliwung River. Out of some 130 factories, there were 50 sugar factories located in the bank of the river. The workers always threw the rubbish of sugar cane into the river. They were not aware that it would make the river flow became clogged up.

Berbagai Kelemahan Pada Implementasi SNMP

SNMP v1 telah dipakai sejak awal tahun 1980-an.

Hotel

is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare. Some hotels have conference services and meeting rooms and encourage groups to hold conventions and meetings at their location.

Hotels differ from motels in that most motels have drive-up, exterior entrances to the rooms, while hotels tend to have interior entrances to the rooms, which may increase guests' safety and present a more upmarket image.

In Australia, a hotel may also be an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks, and usually meals in a casual setting but which does not necessarily provide accommodation. This type of establishment would more usually be called a pub or bar in other countries. In general use in Australia the terms '"hotel" and pub are usually taken to be synonymous.

Origins of the term

The word hotel derives from the French hôtel, which referred to a French version of a townhouse, not a place offering accommodation (in contemporary usage, hôtel has the meaning of "hotel", and hôtel particulier is used for the old meaning). The French spelling (with the circumflex) was once also used in English, but is now rare. The circumflex replaces the 's' once preceding the 't' in the earlier hostel spelling, which over time received a new, but closely related meaning.

Services and facilities

Basic accommodation of a room with only a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with en-suite bathrooms and climate control. Other features found may be a telephone, an alarm clock, a TV, and broadband Internet connectivity. Food and drink may be supplied by a mini-bar (which often includes a small refrigerator) containing snacks and drinks (to be paid for on departure), and tea and coffee making facilities (cups, spoons, an electric kettle and sachets containing instant coffee, tea bags, sugar, and creamer or milk).

In the United Kingdom a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all comers within certain stated hours; to avoid this requirement it is not uncommon to come across "private hotels" which are not subject to this requirement.

However, in Japan the capsule hotel supplies minimal facilities and room space.

Sunda Kelapa

Sunda Kelapa, better known as Pasar Ikan (meaning fish market) is located at the mouth of the Ciliwung river. It was formerly the harbor town of Sunda Kelapa where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Kingdom of Pajajaran in the early 16th century.

The fish catch of the day was auctioned in the early morning at the old fish market. The street leading to it was lined with shops selling all sorts of shells, dehydrated turtles, lobsters and mostly everything the seafarer might need.

Dutch domination of Jakarta and the rest of Indonesia began from this area, whereas the remnants of Kasteel Batavia, an old fort and trading post of the Dutch East Indies Company can still be seen now. Sunda Kelapa is at present a fisherman's wharf and an interisland port. Tall masted Bugis schooners from South Sulawesi anchoring there offer a picturesque scene. They belong to one of the last-fleets of sail boats in the world and still ply the seas between the islands, as they did centuries ago, carrying merchandise.

Jakarta Old Town

Jakarta Old Town (Kota Tua Jakarta), also known as Old Jakarta, and Old Batavia (Oud Batavia), is a small area in Jakarta, Indonesia. This special region spans over 130 ha of both North Jakarta and West Jakarta.

Dubbed "the jewel of asia" back in the 16th century by European sailors, Old Jakarta — or Batavia, as it was named then — was once considered a center of commerce for the whole continent due to its strategic location, fertile resources, and rich culture.

In 1972, the Governor of Jakarta Ali Sadikin issued a decree that officially made the Jakarta Kota area into a heritage site. The governor's decision was necessary in order to preserve the city's architectural roots — or at least what was left of it.

Despite the Governor's Decree, the vicinity remains neglected, as though the majority was pleased just by the issuing of the decree. Not enough was being done to protect and conserve the legacy from the Dutch colonial era.

Now, many remaining historical buildings and architecture are steadily deteriorating; at best, "dilapidated".

However, there is still much hope in restoring the area, especially with various non-profit organizations, private institutions, and even the government recently stepping up to the plate to rejuvenate Old Jakarta's legacy.

University of Indonesia

The University of Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia/UI in Indonesian) is an Indonesian university located in and around the capital of Jakarta. The yellow jacket is worn by UI students.

UI is also famous for being one of the leader of student movement in important points of Indonesian history, notably the Indonesian Reforms Movement of 1998 and Indonesian Revolution of 1966.

Institution

As one of the oldest universities in Indonesia, the University of Indonesia (UI) has pride in its reputation, established by its outstanding learning in 12 faculties (and one polytechnics which later separated to be Jakarta State Polytechnic/PNJ), one graduate school and qualified graduates who have been very influential in the country’s history. Since its establishment in 1950, UI has continued to grow and flourish. Today UI remains a dynamic centre of excellence for research and learning, attracting more than 30,000 Indonesian and international students. Only the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) exceeds UI in prestige as an institute of Indonesian higher learning (Cardiyan HIS, 1991). Most international students come from countries such as Korea, Japan, China, ASEAN countries, Taiwan, Turkey, India, Canada, USA, and Australia. The students are taught by staff at the forefront of their disciplines.

As part of international community, UI has actively cooperated with other international universities and instititutions in the areas of teaching, research, consultations and exchange of students and staff. It also has a strong link with embassies and industry.

History

After the proclamation of independence on the August 17th, 1945, the Indonesian government has realized that education is of utmost important for progress so that a few days afterwards The Republic of Indonesia Institute for Higher Education (BPTRI) was established in Jakarta consisting of the faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy, Letters and Law, which had its first graduation of 90 medical doctors the same year. When the Dutch colonial army occupied Jakarta at the end of 1945, the BPTRI moved to Klaten, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Malang. Meanwhile, the Dutch colonial government, which by 1946 had occupied the big cities and surrounding areas in Indonesia, established a Nood Universiteit or "Emergency University" at Jakarta in 1946. In 1947 the name was changed into "Universitaet van Indonesie" (UVI) or "University of Indonesia" After the end of Indonesian war of independence, when Jakarta became once again the capital of Indonesia, the government established a state university in Jakarta in February 1950 called, Universitaet Indonesia, comprising of units of the BPTRI and UVI. The name Universitaet Indonesia was later changed into Universitas Indonesia (UI).

In 1950, UI was a multi campus university with faculties in Jakarta (Medicine, Law, and Letters), Bogor (Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine), Bandung (Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences), Surabaya (Medicine and Dentistry), and Makassar (Economics). In 1954, the Surabaya campus became Universitas Airlangga; in 1955 the Ujung Pandang campus became Universitas Hasanuddin; in 1959 the Bandung campus became Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB or Bandung Institute of Technology), while the School for Physical Education, which was also located in Bandung, became part of Padjajaran University, in 1960. In 1964, the Bogor campus became Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and the Faculty of Education (FKIP) at Jakarta, became IKIP Jakarta. In a sense UI was the mother of several universities. In 1965, UI consisted of three campuses all in Jakarta, i.e. the Salemba Campus (Medicine, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Science and the Graduate School), the Rawamangun Campus (Letters, Law, Social Science and Psychology) and the Pegangsaan Campus (Public Health and parts of Medicine).

yah... namanya juga nasib. apa mau dikata.

akhirnya, pada tahun 1996, kakak saya berhasil masuk UI depok, jurusan sastra jepang. duh... seneng banget deh rasanya, karena kakak ku berhasil masuk ke kampus biru nya UI.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) or "Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park" (literally translated) is a culture-based recreational area located in East Jakarta, Indonesia. It has an area of about 250 acres. The park is a synopsis of Indonesian culture, with virtually all aspects of daily life in Indonesia's 26 (in 1975) provinces encapsulated in separate pavilions with the collections of architecture, clothing, dances and traditions are all depicted impeccably. Apart from that, there is a lake, cable cars, museums, a theater called "Theater Tanah Airku" ("The Theatre of My Nation") and other recreational facilities which make TMII one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city.

History

This idea of building this smaller scale of Indonesia as whole was originally came from former Indonesian first lady, Siti Hartinah or best-known as Tien Suharto. The idea came out at a convention on 8 Cendana Street at March 13, 1970. Through this recreational site, she hoped more people will have more national pride than before. The project called "Indonesian Miniature Project" was started by Harapan Kita Foundation in 1972. The concept of building this recreational area was taken from the fact that Indonesia has richness from many different sources.

Characteristics

TMII was originally located on an public area of 145 ha, as farms and fields. Later, the team was able to convert this fields into a place to make a recreational site. The topography of TMII is rather hilly, however, this was what the team need. The team said they had got an advantage of this kind of land because they can play around with it to make an interesting site to place the models of each province.
